A man dubbed the "Geneva patient" is the latest person with HIV to be declared in long-term remission -- however he did not receive a transplant with a virus-blocking gene mutation like previous cases, researchers said on Thursday. But they stopped short of saying the man was "cured" of HIV, warning there was still a chance the virus could still return. Five people have previously been declared cured of HIV: the Berlin, London, Duesseldorf, New York and City of Hope, California patients.

Mercenaries from Russian military company Wagner launched joint drills with the Belarusian military on Thursday, almost a month after their short-lived rebellion against Moscow. Poland built up troops on its border with Belarus in response to the war games. The maneuvers followed a pledge by Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin to help protect Belarus from a potential incursion and to bolster its military. The Belarusian Defense Ministry said the weeklong drills would take place at a firing range near Brest, a city on the Polish border. A video released Wednesday appeared to show Prigozhin for the first time since he led last month's mutiny. The recording shows him telling his troops that before deploying to Africa, they would spend some time in Belarus providing training to help “make the Belarusian army the second strongest army in the world.” For more on Wagner's joint training with the Belarusian military on Poland's border, FRANCE 24's Tom Burges Watson is joined by Velina Tchakarova, Founder of FACE Geopolitical Consultancy, Instructor at the Real-World Risk Institute and serves as a Peer Board Member of the Defence Horizon Journal.

Russia on Monday halted a breakthrough wartime deal that allowed grain to flow from Ukraine to countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia where hunger is a growing threat and high food prices have pushed more people into poverty. The suspension marks the end of an accord that the U.N. and Turkey brokered last summer to allow shipments of food from the Black Sea region after Russia's invasion of its neighbor worsened a global food crisis. The initiative is credited with helping reduce soaring prices of wheat, vegetable oil and other global food commodities. For in-depth analysis on Russia's abrupt halt to the landmark deal that allowed Ukraine to export grain at a time of growing hunger, FRANCE 24's Monte Francis is joined by Shashwat Saraf, Regional Emergency Director at the International Rescue Committee in East Africa.

The bridge connecting Crimea and Russia carries heavy significance for Moscow, both logistically and psychologically, as a key artery for military and civilian supplies and as an assertion of Kremlin control of the peninsula it illegally annexed in 2014. An attack on the bridge before dawn Monday, killing a couple and seriously injuring their daughter, left a span of the roadway hanging perilously. The damage initially appeared to be less severe than what was caused by an assault in October, but it highlighted the bridge’s vulnerability. Russia blamed Ukraine for both attacks. A spokesman for the Ukrainian Security Service on Monday did not directly acknowledge responsibility but said the service would reveal details about organizing the blast once Ukraine achieves victory in the war. This second attack on the Crimea bridge was followed by Russia suspending, for a second time, a wartime deal designed to move grain from Ukraine to parts of the world where millions are going hungry. The Black Sea Grain Initiative, brokered by the U.N. and Turkey, has allowed 32.9 million metric tons (36.2 million tons) of food to be exported from Ukraine since August, more than half to developing countries, according to the Joint Coordination Center in Istanbul. Some analysts don't foresee a lasting rise in the cost of commodities like wheat because there’s enough grain in the world to go around. But many countries are already struggling with high local food prices, which are helping fuel hunger. For more on the Crimea Kerch Bridge attack, Russia's suspension of the wartime grain deal and how it threatens world food supplies, FRANCE 24's Delano D'Souza is joined by Dr. Samuel Ramani, Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) and Tutor of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford.

In Benin, part of the difficulties in getting people to donate are cultural beliefs that mean many communities are suspicious of doing so. But experts reckon that a chronic and fatal shortage of blood banks could be fixed if just 1 percent of the country gave blood. Perhaps the biggest and most urgent problem is a phenomenon the French call "medical deserts". What is a medical desert, where are they located in France, and what is the government doing to try to fix the problem? We take a closer look in this edition of French Connections.

The U.N. nuclear agency gave its endorsement on Tuesday to Japan’s planned release of treated radioactive wastewater into the sea from the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant, saying it meets international standards and its environmental and health impact would be negligible. The plan is opposed by groups in South Korea, China and some Pacific Island nations because of safety concerns and political reasons. Local fishing organizations are worried that their reputation will be damaged even if their catch isn't contaminated. Jake Adelstein is in Tokyo for FRANCE 24. He tells us more about what is going on.
