As the 2023 Women's World Cup kicks off in New Zealand, we take a look back at the struggle between FIFA and national broadcasters over TV rights. With FIFA reportedly aiming for $300 million in global media rights, broadcasters were reluctant to meet its price demands, leading to fears of a media blackout. We also look at how viewership figures have increased and how TV revenue is supposed to help bridge the prize money gap between men's and women's football.

The ongoing heatwave in the northern hemisphere highlights the critical importance of reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to renewable energy sources. REN21, a think tank specialising in energy policy, closely monitors the progress of renewable power on an annual basis. According to their global report for 2022, renewable energy achieved a record share of 30% in electricity generation, but still faces challenges in sectors such as heat and fuel. To gain insights into the obstacles and opportunities of the renewable energy transition, we had a conversation with Rana Adib, Executive Editor of REN21.

The Russian government has seized the local subsidiaries of both French dairy group Danone and Danish brewer Carlsberg using a decree signed by President Vladimir Putin on Sunday. This follows the introduction of new rules in April that allow the state to take over the assets of firms from "unfriendly" countries. In this edition, we take a closer look at the tightrope that Western companies have to walk if they are still operating in Russia despite its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has called on rich countries to speed up debt relief to developing nations ahead of the G20 finance ministers' meeting in India this week. Her call comes as a new report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) shows that the number of countries that spend more than 20 percent of their revenue on debt repayments is at its highest level in over two decades, reducing their ability to invest in social programmes. In today's show, we speak to the head of the UNDP, Achim Steiner.

India on Friday sent its Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft on a mission to land on the moon, hoping to join the three other countries that have managed the feat. Comparatively, though, India's quest has a considerably lower budget, with a price tag of $74.6 million. The launch comes at a time of growing opportunities in the space industry. According to an Indian minister, the country's space sector is on trajectory to become a trillion-dollar economy in the coming years.

As protests against Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu's revised plans to reform the courts flare up, we take a look at the impact the controversy has had so far on the country's economy. The Israeli tech sector, which represents 15 percent of GDP, is among those most opposed to the plan. Also in this edition, FRANCE 24's Yinka Oyetade takes a look at how China's youth is turning to street vending in a context of high unemployment.

NATO's 31 members are meeting in Lithuania's capital for a summit where they will discuss a new financial commitment to the Alliance. On Friday, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said member states will "invest a minimum of 2 percent of GDP annually on defence". In this segment, we see that so far only a minority of countries have managed to keep previous spending commitments. We also zero in on the challenges Germany will face in order to increase its budget.

BUSINESS DAILY – Monday, 10.07.2023: We take a look at how the investment of €1.4 billion to clean up the Seine river is beginning to bear fruit. The Paris mayor's office has unveiled the three sections of the Seine that will be safe to swim in by 2025, in a continuation of the Paris Olympics pledge. But first, we discuss how China's economy is still struggling, with the country now on the brink of deflation. Also, Sri Lanka takes stock of its economic woes, one year after its president was ousted.

Shortly after arriving in Beijing, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said her visit was an "opportunity to communicate" and "avoid misunderstanding". Relations between the world's two biggest economies have become strained due to disputes over trade and technology. No major agreements are expected to come out of Yellen's meetings with Chinese officials. Instead, analysts say the focus is on restarting dialogue. We take a closer look at the high-stakes, low-expectations trip.

News junkies can be forgiven for not having heard of gallium and germanium until now. That's all about to change. If our growing general knowledge of the periodic table seemed timed with the visit to Beijing of the US Treasury Secretary, that's because China is announcing controls on exports of key rare minerals that only it produces; minerals essential for microchips as well as electric vehicles and fibre-optic cables.

Seven hours after its launch, some 10 million people had signed up to the new "text-based social media platform" Threads, according to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The app aims to attract Twitter users who are unhappy with some of the changes on that platform under Elon Musk's ownership. It's an easy way to get clicks when the world's richest man challenges the ninth richest to a cage fight. But it's actually win-win for them if the owner of Twitter and the founder of Facebook have us debating whether we are Team Musk or Team Zuckerberg, instead of the outsized power the pair enjoy thanks to the concentration of popular, mostly unregulated social media platforms in the hands of a few.
